Bio

Kiril Valchev was born on May 24, 1973 in Sofia. He graduated from the National High School for Ancient Languages and Cultures “Konstantin-Kyril the Philosopher”. He has a master’s degree in law at the Faculty of Law of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. In 1995, he completed a professional course in radio management at “Deutsche Welle” in Cologne, Germany. In 2000, he held a scholarship in the Program for European Leaders of the “German Marshall Fund” in the USA. He also completed an internship (in 2003) in the Bulgarian section of BBC London, Great Britain. He is a long-time author and host of the overview talk shows “The Week” (since 1994) and “The Year” (since 1996) of Darik Radio. A keen traveler – he has visited 182 of the 193 countries that are members of the United Nations (UN), as well as all continents.

From 2000 to 2004, he was a part-time assistant in civil law at the Faculty of Law of the Sofia University “St. Climent Ohridski“. Since 2005, he has been managing partner of a law firm specializing in media and intellectual property. He advises media, theaters, operas, philharmonics, museums, galleries, individual creators and artists. Since 2005, he has been the secretary of the Management Board and a permanent legal consultant for the establishment and activities of the Union of Bulgarian National Electronic Media – an association of BTA, BNT, BNR, BTV, Nova TV and Darik Radio. In 2019-2020, he was a member of the expert group for amendments to the Radio and Television Act at the Culture and Media Committee of the National Assembly. He has been awareded a number of honors and awards in the field of media.

As a lawyer in the field of intellectual property and media law, Kiril Valchev has been actively participating in the life of BTA as a legal consultant. In 2003 and 2011, Valchev was a legal consultant in the preparation of a draft BTA Act (at the end of 2011, the Act was adopted by Parliament). From 1993 to 1995, he was part of the “Foreign Information” Editorial Office of BTA. He is also a participant and moderator of discussions at the World Meetings of Bulgarian Media, organized by BTA and the Association of Bulgarian Media Worldwide.

On January 27, 2021, he was elected by the 44th National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria Director General of BTA.
